Vizio TV Turns Itself On

Oftentimes when you switch off your TV, it remains in that state until you decide to turn it back on. However, Vizio TVs face the problem of powering themselves on, something that can be a nuisance, especially if you are sleeping.  So what causes this to happen?

A Vizio TV can turn itself on because other devices nearby, like a gaming system or a cable box are powering it on since they are linked to it via HDMI CEC. Also, a Vizio remote of another Vizio electronic may cause this since most can work on this brand’s TVs.

In this article, I’ll discuss further the reasons why your Vizio TV may power itself on and how to fix all these issues. Let’s get down to it.

Why Your Vizio TV Turns Itself On

Although Vizio TVs are a popular and great series, they have a common problem of powering themselves on. The issue can be caused by several reasons.

CEC Setting Is On

Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) is a feature that allows your Vizio TV to share commands with other devices that are connected via HDMI.

You’ll come across this issue with other smart devices that control TVs as well. For instance, people who use Fire TV Sticks have issues with their TVs turning themselves on as well

This can enable you to control all these gadgets using one remote. But with this setting on, that linked equipment can also activate your television.

Other Remotes Power It On

If you have other Vizio devices in the vicinity, like a sound bar or another TV, their remotes can turn on your TV. This is because Vizio TV is sensitive to most of them. A quicker solution will require you to completely switch off these electronics from the wall when you are not using them.

However, I provide a more permanent solution further ahead in this article, so keep reading.

The Power Button on Your Remote Is Stuck

This button can get set in place when the dust is logged inside the button or when it’s damaged, forcing it to stay in power-on mode.

Another reason behind this could be that objects are accidentally put on top of the remote that triggers the power button. That’s why it’s advisable to place the remote on a coffee table or back on the TV stand when you finish watching TV to avoid that from happening.

Casting From Other Apps

If this smart TV is connected to Wi-Fi, you and your family may unintentionally use certain apps on your phones.

For example, when Google Home is connected, you can end up turning your screen on when you say anything with ‘Google and TV’ from wherever you are. This is because the app may think you are commanding it to carry out that action.

How To Fix the Problem of Your Vizio TV Powering Itself On

You can stop this annoying occurrence with the following solutions:

1. Turn Off the CEC Setting

By doing this, you will stop other devices connected to your TV from switching it on when they are powered on. Select Settings, System, CEC, and after, choose Off. However, with CEC disabled, you will no longer control all your electronics using a single remote.

2. Use Vizio SmartCast Mobile Application as Your Remote

This will solve the problem of other Vizio remotes which are not for your TV, turning it on. Make sure your Wi-Fi and Vizio TV are connected before you download the app on your smartphone to create an account that will enable you to get started.

  1. Find your TV on the list of SmartCast devices in your home and click on it to pair it with the application.
  2. Enter the 4-digit code that appears at the top of your TV screen to link the two devices.

So now you can use the app as your Vizio TV’s remote controller.

3. Switch From Eco Mode to Quick Start Setting

The Eco mode setting is meant to reduce the amount of power your TV consumes by controlling its various settings. But in the process of doing this, it may end up causing the problem of your TV automatically turning itself on.

To resolve this issue:

  1. Press Settings on the remote and navigate to System to select Power Mode.
  2. If you find that Eco Mode is on, switch to Quick Start.

4. Remove Items on Top of the Remote and Clean It

These could be books or clothes that are jamming the power-on button, and once removed, the TV will go back to working properly. However, the problem may as well be caused by dirt inside the remote buttons. Blow air on the remote using a canned air duster, such as the Falcon Dust Off Cleaning Duster, then wipe it clean with a damp cloth.

5. Power Cycle Your TV

Power cycling helps to fix any issue a TV has and can as well fix the self-turning-on problem.

  1. Unplug the Vizio TV from the socket, then press its power button for about 3-5 seconds before powering it back on.
  2. If your TV has a ‘Soft Power Cycle’ option, go to the menu and select System, Reset & Admin, Soft Power Cycle

6. Factory Reset the TV

This should be your last resort when all the other solutions fail to work. The reset will delete all apps and settings that may be causing the problem, such as Wi-Fi which could allow someone on the network to unknowingly turn on your Vizio Smart TV when they cast an app.

  1. To start the process, press Menu on your remote.
  2. Select System, Reset & Admin, Reset to Factory Settings
  3. Afterwards, set up the TV again like you did when you had just bought it.

7. Contact a Vizio Support Agent

If the problem persists after trying all the above fixes, send a callback request with your name, phone number, available time, the issue, and TV model number to a customer support representative.

The agent will call you back within your stated timeframe and help you solve the problem. So you need to put a period when you will have lots of free time because it could take a while for the person to resolve this issue.
