Vizio TV Keeps Turning Off

Vizio TVs are affordable smart TVs that have gained a lot of popularity for their convenience and great price. But with greater connectivity and complexity, tech problems are sure to follow. For example, one issue customers are running into is their Vizio TV abruptly turning off without any warning.

Your Vizio TV keeps turning off because the auto power function is on. Other causes include the TV overheating, a power surge, or you have multiple Vizio TVs and interfering signals. Luckily, these issues are simple to resolve.

In this article, I’ll take you through the main reasons your Vizio TV keeps turning off. I’ll also provide four easy fixes to these issues. Let’s get started!

Why Your Vizio TV Keeps Turning Off

In this article’s introduction, I explained why your Vizio TV might turn off unexpectedly. Smart TVs turning off abruptly is a common issue, and the same sometimes happens with TV dongles

This section will explain the reasons in more detail:

The Auto Power Off Function Is On

The auto power off function is unique to Vizio Smart TVs and is the number one cause of the TV abruptly shutting off. The purpose of this feature is to conserve electricity if your TV is left idle.

In your TV’s settings section, you can select a preset amount of time that has to pass before your TV is shut off. For example, if you leave your Vizio TV on the home screen and your auto-off feature is set to fifteen minutes, the TV will shut off after fifteen minutes if no activity passes.

This feature is automatically turned on when you set up the TV for the first time, so keep in mind that you’ll have to navigate to the settings if you want to turn it off.

Your Vizio TV Is Overheating

If your TV is getting too hot, it could be shutting off as a safety measure. Since Vizio TVs are a one-stop shop for streaming content and playing your favorite games, they tend to get left on for most of the day, which can lead to overheating.

Overheating can cause hardware issues, and once it reaches a specific temperature, your Vizio TV will shut off to preserve its internal components. Thankfully, there’s a lot you can do to solve this common issue.

A Power Surge Has Occurred

Sometimes, a power surge can cause your Vizio TV to turn off suddenly. Power surges are almost impossible to predict, and the best way to prevent one from affecting your TV is to purchase a surge protector. The surge protector will divert the spike in electricity and prevent your TV from turning off.

You Have Multiple Vizio TVs and Interfering Signals

If you have multiple Vizio TVs, the Vizio remote could be picking up another TV’s signal and shutting it off. The good news is that this means your TV isn’t likely to be broken but simply receiving a signal intended for another device.

The best way to combat this is to buy a universal remote to use for one of your Vizio TVs. This way, the remote won’t pick up a TV signal in another room.

The CEC feature, or Consumer Electronic Control, plays a part in interfering with your Vizios signal. This feature allows electronic devices to be controlled by a universal remote for greater convenience. It’s helpful because it will enable one remote to control multiple devices, but it can also unintentionally pick up the signal from your Vizio TV.

4 Easy Fixes for a Vizio That Keeps Turning Off

Now that you know what could be causing your Vizio TV to keep shutting off when you don’t want it to, you can try any one of the possible fixes below:

1. Disconnect the TV and Wifi

A quick reset is always the first thing you should try when diagnosing a technology issue. Sometimes, it’s as easy as just restarting your wifi and TV.

It’s important to wait a few minutes after shutting your Vizio Smart TV off as this will allow the device to power down. You also shouldn’t rush through the WiFi reset.

2. Power Cycle Your Vizio TV

A power cycle allows your Vizio TV to fully reboot. It’s also known as a hard reset. The most important step is to make sure that your TV is unplugged for a full ten minutes. This allows it to fully reset itself and work out whatever glitch is causing it to shut off.

Completing a power cycle is a step above disconnecting the WiFi, but just as simple to perform:

Gizmo Geek Guide posted this on January 10, 2023 as the original owner of this article.

  1. Disconnect your Smart TV from its WiFi connection
  2. Unplug your TV from the power source for a full five minutes. Don’t be impatient on this step. Unplugging it for five minutes will allow the electricity to cycle through and leave your device.
  3. After five minutes, plug your TV back in, switch it on, and reconnect to the WiFii.

3. Make Sure Your TV Doesn’t Overheat

Overheating will cause your Vizio to shut off. To prevent this, make sure it’s in a well-ventilated area, and that there is no dust or dirt clogging up the ventilation holes (which can be found at the back of the TV).

Additionally, make sure your Vizio TV isn’t in direct intense sunlight all day. Drawing your curtains or blinds can help this issue.

4. Turn on Eco Mode

The purpose of Eco Mode is to save power, but the way in which it does that can solve the issue you’re facing now. Eco Mode shuts off all other Bluetooth devices connected to your Vizio TV in order to conserve energy. In this case, it also prevents their signal from interfering with your Vizio TV.

This is important because Bluetooth-connected devices have been known to interfere with smart devices and create some off-the-wall glitches, one of which is shutting them off if the Bluetooth device is being used.

Final Thoughts

The value that Vizio TVs have far outweigh any minor tech mishaps they may experience. What’s more, there are plenty of easy ways to fix any issue they may present. Most of these are pretty common tech fixes, such as performing a hard reset.

Many customers have been experiencing this issue recently, but, as you can see, it’s a reasonably easy problem to solve and shouldn’t affect your decision to buy or keep this incredibly convenient product.
