TCL TV Won’t Turn On

Although TCL TVs offer a great product for an affordable price, you might encounter a few drawbacks and glitches. One common issue is when your TCL TV won’t turn on—why is that?

A TCL TV might not turn on due to a faulty power source, dust, input sources, or even a bad microprocessor. Fixing the problem includes changing power sources, power cycling, changing the input source, resetting your TV, or cleaning it from dust.

In this article, I’ll discuss why your TCL TV might not turn on. I’ll also provide fixes and troubleshooting methods to help you turn it back on.

Why Your TCL TV Isn’t Turning On

Besides the Fire TV Stick black screen, finding that your TV won’t turn on is probably the most annoying thing you can experience. All you wanted was to kick back and relax with a movie. Luckily, the most common reasons that a TCL TV isn’t turning on are easy to spot and fix.

Faulty Power Source

It’s surprising how many buildings and homes have wiring and outlets that aren’t up to the electrical code requirements. This usually means that a faulty electrical outlet will prevent power from reaching your TV and won’t turn on.

Even if your wiring is pristine, you might find that the cable coming out of the TV is frayed. If you’re using an extension cord, there’s also a chance it’s malfunctioning.

Remote Batteries Ran Out

The remote is the first thing you should check when you find that your TCL TV isn’t turning on. The batteries provided with the TV remote should last a while, but when they run out, you’ll find that you’re unable to turn on the unit. Not to worry, batteries are cheap, but I suggest buying the rechargeable kind.

Your TV Is Dusty Inside

Dust from the air around us can wreak havoc on electrical equipment of all sorts. In fact, some researchers say that dust is a leading cause of electric current disruption. In other words, dust inside your TV could prevent electrical current from flowing through it properly. As such, it doesn’t power on unless the dust is removed.

Incorrect Input Sources

Sometimes the TV appears turned off when in reality, it’s just giving you a blank screen. This often happens when you’ve chosen an input source without connecting the TV to the source.

For example, if you connected the HDMI cable to your laptop and then took it out, the screen would remain black. After turning it off and on again, it would appear that nothing is happening because there is no input source

Malfunctioning Microprocessor

Finally, power surges and other electrical glitches can cause one of the microprocessors in your TCL TV to malfunction. This issue is difficult to diagnose and certainly more difficult to fix. I wouldn’t go as far as saying a microprocessor is damaged.

Troubleshoot and rule out all other possible causes for the TV not turning on before you consider that there might be an issue with the microprocessor.

Fixes for TCL TV Not Turning On

Even though there are many reasons why your TCL TV isn’t turning on, troubleshooting is pretty easy. Here are a few things you can do to figure out what’s wrong and how to fix it.

1. Change the Power Source

Check the electrical outlet you have your TV plugged into by connecting a different device to it—for example, your phone charger. If the other device isn’t working, the electrical outlet has malfunctioned.

All you’ll need to do is call an electrician to fix it or replace the extension cord if that’s what your TV was connected to.

2. Check Your Remote Batteries

As mentioned earlier, if your remote batteries are completely drained, you’ll find yourself clicking with no response from the TV. Before you go ahead and buy new batteries, use your smartphone to check if the remote is working at all:

  1. Open up the camera app on your smartphone.
  2. Switch to the rear-facing camera
  3. Point the camera at the top of your remote while pressing any random button on the remote.

If you see a flickering light coming from the small light bulb on the top of the remote, it’s still working. Otherwise, it’s time to replace the batteries.

3. Dust the Inside of Your TV

Dusty motherboards are easy to clean using a can of compressed air, but I suggest taking the TV to a professional if you’re not confident. To clean dust from the inside of your TV, spray the can of compressed air with the nozzle facing the air vents.

Avoid inserting the nozzle through the air vents, as this could damage sensitive and delicate electrical components inside the TV.

4. Go Through the Power Cycle on Your TV

The oldest trick in the book: Turn it off and turn it on again. You’ve probably heard this rule for any and all electric devices and appliances. That’s simply because it works!

Power cycling allows the TV to reset saved configurations and parameters to get out of a situation where it has crashed or is stuck in a loop sequence.

5. Change the Input Source

The input source setting on your TCL TV can change accidentally if you press the source button. You can usually find this on the right-hand side below the central four arrows of the remote. It looks like a rectangle with an arrow pointing to the right.

When pressed, you should be presented with a list of source options that include AV, HDMI, etc. Pick the appropriate one.

6. Perform a Factory Reset

TCL TVs have a reset button that you’ll be able to find right above the HDMI or USB port. It’s a small button, so look carefully. To reset factory parameters, make sure your TV is plugged in. Then, press the button for more than 30 seconds, and the TV will handle the rest.

Note: Your saved apps and history may be deleted during the factory reset process.

Final Thoughts

Despite the numerous reports of TCL TVs that won’t turn on, there is usually a simple fix. Make sure to go through the troubleshooting steps before you consider taking it to a service center. If you find that your TV is beyond repair, it might be time to consider newer options available.
