Sony televisions are famous for their excellent sound quality, as the sound system creates a multidimensional experience. But like any other electronic device, TVs can often malfunction and cause a disruption with the sound system. So, what can you do if your Sony TV has no sound?
Your Sony TV may have no sound if the speaker settings are not correct. You must also look for other reasons, such as loose wiring, volume issues, or hardware damage. You can solve most of these problems yourself. However, you may have to return the TV set if it’s the manufacturer’s fault.
Not everyone can deal with technical faults, but if it’s something simple, you may not have to call experts to fix your TV. Read the rest of this article to understand the problems and find their solutions.
Reasons Your Sony TV Has No Sound
When your Sony TV doesn’t have sound, the solution can sometimes be as simple as unmuting the sound using the remote control. You must also check the volume button to see if it’s turned all the way down.
You can also try to switch your television off and restart the system again. Another way to restart is to take the power cable out, leave it for a few minutes, and then plug it back again.
However, when these simple fixes don’t work, it’s time to investigate further and figure out the problem.
Let’s start.
TV Speaker Settings
You must check the speaker settings when you set up a new TV set, especially if it’s a smart TV. It is possible that factory settings don’t have speakers as the default audio output. When this happens, your TV’s sound is fine but doesn’t reach the speakers.
In this case, the volume control and the system restart won’t work. You must adjust the settings manually.
Faulty Sound System
Many of us like to connect our TV with an external sound system like a home theater. So, when you turn the sound system on and the TV has no sound, you must recheck the speaker settings.
If the TV has no sound even if the speaker settings are fine, then the issue can be the external sound system. It could be bad wiring or wrong input or output connections. Also, check your speakers for hardware damage.
Faulty Wiring
When the sound settings are fine, but you still can’t hear any sound from your Sony TV, the issue could be with the wiring. There could be a missing wire or connection that is breaking the entire circuit.
Another issue can be the quality of your cables. This usually happens when you use low-quality or unoriginal wires/cables.
External Devices
External devices such as Firestick, Chromecast, Apple TV, etc. may cause some problems too. These devices have speakers, which may interfere with your TV speaker. So, your TV’s sound may be getting blocked. So, you may hear no sound if your device is on, but you aren’t using it.
Easy Fixes for Sony TV No Sound
Now that we know the problems, it’s time to find out the solutions. You can handle most of these issues yourself without any difficulty.
1. Change the Speaker Settings
You can quickly fix the sound if the problem is with the default audio output. You only have to change the settings to Speaker, and you’ll get the sound.
Different Sony models have different TV remotes, so you’ll have to find the settings button on the remote you have. In some remotes, you can access Settings by clicking the button for Quick Settings, while in others, you can do it by pressing the Home button.
The Settings menu display is also different for every model. Here is how you may see your Settings menu:
- Select Display & Sound/Sound/Settings.
- Next, select Audio Output if you see it. Other options are Speakers, Sound, or AV Setup.
- For models with Display & Sound and Sound, the next step is to select Speakers.
- The last step for all models is to choose TV Speakers.
You should now be able to hear sound.
Before you change audio settings, you should remove headphones if you like to use them while watching TV.
2. Fix the External Sound System
You must change the speaker settings if you use anything other than your TV’s built-in speakers. The steps are the same as I mentioned in Change the Speaker Settings section.
However, in the last step, you must choose external speakers instead of TV speakers. This sets up your home theater and the audio output device.
You must take the sound system back to the retailer if there is a problem with the hardware.

3. Faulty Wiring
Sometimes it’s just the wiring or connections that need fixing. You must check if the cable connections are correct. Check all the input and output sources.
Check your HDMI cable or audio wire if you have an external sound system. Home theaters may have input and output ports, so if you use a three-pin cable, you must put them in the correct ports. The ports and cables are mostly color-coded, so you should be able to do it quickly.
Replace the cable or the wire if you think the quality of the wire is the issue.
4. Remove the External Device
When the problem is due to an external device, the obvious solution is to remove it while watching TV. However, you can turn your device off if you don’t want to remove the device. When you switch the device off, it won’t block any TV audio signals.
It is also good to revisit your TV Speaker Settings to ensure TV speakers are your default audio output. Follow the same steps for TV Speaker Settings as mentioned above.

Final Thoughts
When your Sony TV doesn’t have sound, you may be able to figure out the problem. You must start by checking the mute button. Remember, don’t try to open the TV set to check the hardware. The problem could be external. Call the manufacturer or Sony’s professional repair team if it’s the hardware.
