You wake up in the middle of the night to a weird sound in your living room. A little spooked, you enter the living room just to find your Samsung TV turned on. After channeling your inner Sherlock Holmes, you realize that the TV turned itself on. Before you call up Watson to assist, you should know that this is a frequent bug in Samsung TVs.
Your Samsung TV can turn itself on if you’ve enabled the Anynet+ option. There’s also a chance that if you’ve enabled SmartThings on your TV, you might accidentally switch it on from one of the connected devices. If not, you might’ve set a sleep timer that is scheduled to turn your TV on at a specific time.
While a TV turning itself on sounds scary, don’t worry. You won’t need to call a priest to perform an exorcism on your house. All you need to do is a little bit of tweaking to fix the problem that lies within your newly purchased Samsung TV.
What Causes Samsung TVs To Turn On by Themselves
Before we get to the solutions, it’s best to know about what prompts Samsung TVs to turn themselves on: Anynet+ and SmartThings. What are both these things? Let’s find out:
Cause 1: Anynet+
Anynet+, also known as HDMI-CEC, is a feature in Samsung TVs that gives you control of devices that are connected to your TV through an HDMI cable. For instance, if you’ve connected a DVD player or a soundbar with your TV through an HDMI cable, you’ll be able to control both through your TV’s remote.
However, some of these HDMI devices are programmed so that when you turn them on, they’ll automatically turn the TV on as well.
Cause 2: SmartThings
SmartThings is a home automation feature developed by Samsung that comes installed in some Samsung TVs. You can use it to connect and control multiple devices from your phone, including your TV. So there’s a chance that while you were sleeping or the phone was inside your pocket, an accidental touch might’ve caused the television to be turned on.
Cause 3: Disable Sleep Timer
Sleep Timer is an option designed to automatically start or shut your TV off at a specific time. While the feature is a great way to cut down your electricity bill costs, it might also be why your TV turns on randomly during the day. I recommend turning it off to see if it fixes the problem.
Solutions To Fix TV Turning Itself On
Now you know the primary causes that can turn your TV on by itself, so let’s discuss how we can fix them. To help you, we’ve even listed some other things you can try in case disabling these features doesn’t solve the problem at hand.
Solution 1: Disable AnyNet+
Turning off AnyNet is quite a simple task. However, bear in mind that once you do, you won’t be able to control any devices with your remote control.
Here’s how to turn it off:
Step 1: Click the Home button on your remote
Step 2: On your TV screen, go to Settings → General → External Device Manager → AnyNet+
Step 3: Toggle the option to Off to turn off the feature
Solution 2: Disable SmartThings
If disabling AnyNet+ didn’t work out for you, then turning off SmartThings should surely do the trick. Follow these steps to turn off the feature:
Step 1: Press the Home button on your remote control
Step 2: Go to Settings → All Settings → Connection → Network → Expert Settings
Step 3: After that, deselect the Power On with Mobile if it’s highlighted.
Now you won’t be able to turn your TV on via your smartphone.
Solution 3: Disable Sleep Timer
Sleep timer is another feature on your Samsung TV that might be instigating why your TV turns itself on automatically. Here’s how to turn it off.
Step 1: Press the Home button on your remote control
Step 2: Scroll down to Settings → General and click Ok on the prompt that appears
Step 3: Then go to System Manager → Sleep Timer and turn it to Off if it isn’t
Solution 4: Soft Reset Your Samsung TV
If the above three methods didn’t work, the problem probably lies within the software of your TV. But worry not! You can soft reset your Samsung TV, hopefully resolving the problem at hand. Think about it; we restart our phones whenever we encounter a glitch on them. So who’s to say the same method won’t work for your TV?

How To Soft Reset Your Samsung TV
Step 1: Unplug your TV from the power cord for a minute. After waiting for 60 seconds, proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: Then, go to your TV’s power button and hold it down for 30 seconds. Make sure you’re not holding down the power button of your remote control.
This will drain any residual energy present in your TV and is different from simply turning your TV on and off.
Solution 5: Replace Faulty Capacitors
Capacitors play an essential in turning your TV on and off. They provide your TV with the current it needs to function correctly. However, if any one of your capacitors gets faulty, it may start acting funny and cause your TV to turn on and off randomly. To replace them, you’ll need to access the back panel of your TV.
Keep in mind that if your TV is covered under warranty, we recommend contacting Samsung Support itself since tinkering with the back panel voids the product warranty. However, if your TV is no longer under warranty, you can open the rear panel and spot faulty capacitors since they’re easy to spot.

If you spot one, you’ll have to order one of the same size and value as the broken one. If you’re unable to spot them, you can just go with replacing the whole board. I would recommend you consult a professional before attempting to replace the board or the capacitor.
Solution 6: Updating Your TV’s Software
Updating your TV’s software might just be the solution you’re looking for. You can check to see if there’s an update available. Samsung keeps sending software updates from time to time to fix glitches that may be causing troubles like Smart TVs turning themselves on.
How To Update Firmware
Here’s how you can update your Samsung TV’s firmware at home:
Step 1: Search for the Settings button on your remote control. If you cannot locate it, try finding the Menu button instead and click it.
Step 2: Select Support → Software Update → Update Now
The TV will then start updating. Be sure not to turn off your TV while it’s updating. After the update is completed, your TV will restart automatically, and hopefully, the software that might be causing your TV to turn on will now be fixed.
