Netflix Not Working on Roku TV

With so many connected devices these days, troubleshooting is a constant requirement. There’s nothing worse than sitting down to binge-watch your favorite new series only to find Netflix isn’t working. If you’re using a Roku TV, there are a few reasons why this might happen.

Roku TV Netflix Not Working

Netflix may not work on Roku TV if your TV loses connection with the internet. It may also stop working if either the Netflix app or your Roku TV needs to be updated. Finally, the problem can also be rooted in issues with your Netflix account.

Today we’ll discuss each of these issues in-depth, and then we’ll talk about some easy solutions to get Netflix up and running again. Let’s get started.

Why Netflix Isn’t Working on Your Roku TV

Roku TV Why Netflix Not Working

When Netflix stops working on your Roku TV, it’s most often because the TV isn’t maintaining a good connection to the internet. This is very common and can happen because the modem and the TV aren’t close enough to each other, as well as a few other reasons.

Where internet connectivity is not a problem, it usually boils down to either the Netflix app or the Roku TV needing an update. We often get so caught up in our day-to-day streaming that we forget that all smart electronics and apps need regular updates. When updates aren’t installed, glitches often result.

The least likely reason that Netflix has gone down is that you’ve encountered a problem with your Netflix account. This may have to do with the plan you’ve set up with Netflix, such as streaming restrictions.

Let’s look at each of these in a bit more depth.

The Internet Connection Is Weak

A weak internet connection is one of the most annoying parts of technology today. With so many devices, it can feel a bit overwhelming to try and figure out what’s connected and what’s not.

On top of this, it’s near impossible to keep your internet modem close enough to all your devices to achieve a decent connection consistently.

If a Roku TV becomes disconnected or has a consistently weak signal, this can easily cause playback issues with Netflix and other video streaming apps.

You may also encounter a problem with Roku TV repeatedly disconnecting from the internet. This falls under the same category but happens for a different reason. Usually, if this is happening, it’s because of a software problem with the TV.

The Roku TV or Netflix App Needs to be Updated

Roku TV and Netflix Needs Update

As I mentioned, devices and apps nowadays need frequent updates. There’s not a lot you can do to avoid these, and it can cause significant problems when not taken care of.

Usually, you can go into your Roku TVs settings and check for updates. Roku TV should also update automatically. Still, on occasion, you may need to go into the settings tab and manually initiate an update.

When it comes to Netflix, you’ll probably need to update the app manually every time. While apps update on their own, especially on smartphones, they don’t always update properly on the TV. Many times this falls back to the same internet issues.

In any case, you can usually get an updated app by uninstalling and reinstalling it.

A Problem With Your Netflix Account

One common issue that doesn’t usually spring to mind is that the problem may be with your Netflix account rather than the internet or a Roku TV.

Netflix has a variety of plans. When the plan changes without your knowledge – usually when sharing an account with other users – you may run into problems where Netflix will no longer load the same content it did previously.

Another possibility is that the Netflix account you are using has some streaming restrictions placed on it. In this case, you will be limited by what you can do depending on your package.

Alternatively, another user sharing the account may have changed the password on your account. Note that when the password is changed on one account, Netflix doesn’t automatically log the other users out. Instead, the app simply won’t load any content.

How To Fix Netflix Not Working on Your Roku TV

Now that we’ve discussed why Netflix isn’t working on your Roku TV let’s cover some standard solutions. Most of the time, these issues can be easily solved.

One of the best things you can do is restart your Roku TV. Aside from that, you can also update your Roku software or try uninstalling and reinstalling your Netflix app. If you’re dealing with an internet issue, you can also try moving the modem closer to your TV.

1. Restart Your Roku TV

It seems as if turning off your electronics and turning them back on in a few minutes is the answer to all of life’s problems. Often this simple step is enough to make all sorts of device issues resolve tghemselves.

So, if Netflix is giving you problems, and you’re confident it’s not a problem with the internet, I would recommend shutting off your TV, unplugging it for about thirty seconds, and then plugging it back in.

This does a reset on your Roku TV and gets everything back in working order without removing preferences, which a factory reset does.

2. Update Your Roku TV and Netflix App

Roku TVs have an option to check for updates in their settings. Here’s a helpful article on how to navigate to this.

Usually, the TV will need a software update at least every few months. Without this, it becomes clogged with information and bugs and begins to glitch or freeze.

You will also want to update Netflix. The easiest way to do this is to simply uninstall and reinstall the app. The newest version of the app will always be the one that gets reinstalled.

3. Rearrange the Internet Modem or Get an Extender

If you notice that your Roku TV is disconnecting and reconnecting from the internet regularly, it’s likely because the TV is receiving a weak connection from your internet source.

Another possible problem is that you don’t have an internet package that supports the speed you need to stream Netflix.

In this case, the first thing I would suggest is to move your internet modem or TV so that they are closer together. This may not always be possible, but it will provide you with the best internet connection.

If you can’t do this, the next best option is to purchase a WiFi extender. You can plug the extender right next to the Roku TV, ensuring that the TV receives a better signal.

Final Thoughts

When Netflix stops working on your Roku TV, it’s usually either due to a problem with the internet or issues with your TV or app being outdated.

It is best to update the Roku TV and reinstall Netflix. You can also rearrange your setup to give the TV a better signal.

If the problem is with your Netflix account, the best thing to do is contact Netflix directly.
