Hulu Not Working on Vizio TV

When I installed Hulu on my Vizio smart TV, it worked well—but of late, it has been acting up. It may get stuck on the home page or turn into a black screen, and when it loads, it sometimes starts buffering. I decided to find all the causes and possible solutions.

Hulu may not be working on your Vizio TV because the Hulu servers are down or because of the TV’s cache. It also could be slow internet speeds or outdated TV software. Some fixes include resetting the TV to factory settings, restarting WiFi, and clearing the TV cache.

In this article, I’ll discuss the reasons why Hulu isn’t working on your Vizio TV and the solutions you have at hand.

Why Hulu Is Not Working on Your Vizio TV

Temporary Glitch in Your Vizio TV

If Hulu fails to move past the home page or if it goes black, it is possible that your Vizio TV has a bug or there was a temporary glitch that caused Hulu to stop running. If you suspect this is the issue, you should attempt fixing it first, as it has a quick and easy solution: you just have to restart your TV.

The TV Needs a Software Update

Newer models of the Vizio TV are updated regularly, and one of these updates may affect the performance of apps like Hulu. If your TV isn’t up to date, Hulu may fail to load. If you have automatic updates turned on on your TV, this might not be the issue, but it’s still worth checking if you can do it manually.

Slow Internet

Sometimes, the problem is not with the Hulu app or your Vizio TV but with your internet connection. As with most streaming services, Hulu only works when you have a stable internet connection. If Hulu fails to load or buffers, your internet speed is probably too slow.

You need an internet speed of at least 1.5 Mbps for streaming in standard definition and 6Mbps for watching content in HD.

The Hulu Server May Be Down

Hulu may not be working on your Vizio TV because the Hulu server is down. If this is the case, you have no choice but to wait until Hulu fixes the problem. Hulu will not work on your other devices when the server is down.

You can confirm this by checking if Hulu is running on your smartphone or any other device. You have no reason to be concerned when you receive the same feedback on all your devices.

If you need further confirmation, you can visit a third-party site, like Down detector, to check Hulu’s status.

Your Vizio TV Is No Longer Supported

Hulu only runs on Vizio TV models released in 2016 and later. These TVs have the Hulu app pre-installed. Some of the older models were phased out as Hulu upgraded. Here is a list of Vizio TV models that no longer support Hulu.

Here’s how to check your Vizio TV model to confirm its compatibility with Hulu.

  1. Press the Menu button.
  2. Go to “System“. If you are using an older model, scroll to “Help“.
  3. Click OK

Your Vizio TV’s serial number and model number are listed under the information on the system.

If the apps on your older Vizio TV model keep crashing, you can also opt for a Fire TV Stick. I have discussed the Fire TV Stick extensively and the steps you should take if you encounter similar problems.

The Amazon Fire TV Stick is compatible with all the major streaming services, including Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Alexa is also available. You can listen to music on Spotify and Amazon Music.

Built-Up Cache Is Affecting Your TV’s Performance

If Hulu takes too long to load, your TV is probably overwhelmed by unnecessary saved data and cache. If you haven’t cleared the cache off your device recently, it’s probably time for you to do it.

Some of the signs of built-up cache on your Vizio TV include:

  • Buffering
  • Crashing apps
  • Freezing screen
  • Apps loading slowly
  • The sound is going on and off without your input

5 Easy Fixes for Hulu Not Working on Vizio TV

1. Restart the TV

  1. Unplug the TV from the socket.
  2. Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  3. Plug back the TV and restart it.

This should get rid of any temporary bug that was causing trouble in Hulu or your TV software. If the problem persists, move on to the next fixes.

2. Update the TV

  1. Click the Menu button on the TV remote.
  2. Click on settings and choose “system.”
  3. Check updates.
  4. Automatically install any software updates available.

This process may not work on older Vizio TV models. Instead, you will need to uninstall the Hulu app and reinstall it.

3. Troubleshoot Your Internet Connection

Start by testing other apps to see if they are also taking too long to load or aren’t loading at all.

Using your Smartphone or laptop, go to Fast.com to test your internet’s speed. If you notice that it’s slower than usual, unplug your router, wait for 30 seconds, and plug it in again. Try loading Hulu again and see if it works.

If your internet is still slower than usual, contact your internet provider. If your base speed is too low, consider changing your internet plan.

4. Clear the Cache

You can clear the cache by rebooting your Vizio TV.

  1. Click the Menu button.
  2. Scroll to “System” and click it.
  3. Go to “Reset & admin.”
  4. Select “Reboot TV.”

Alternatively, you can delete the cache of specific apps:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select “Apps” and look for Hulu and other apps you use often.
  3. Select the app and click “Clear Cache.”

5. Reset Factory Settings

If you have a new model and the problem persists, consider restoring to factory settings. This means you are going back to before you set up Hulu. To do this:

  1. Click the menu button.
  2. Scroll to “System.”
  3. Scroll until you get to “Reset & admin.” Click on it.
  4. Go to “Reset the factory settings.”
  5. When you click reset, a pop-up window will ask you to confirm. Click “Reset.”

You’ll need to set up your WiFi password, language, region, and other settings again. When you go to Hulu, it should run perfectly.

You don’t need the services of a professional to determine why Hulu is not running on your Vizio TV. Some of the issues are easy to detect, such as a low internet speed. You can also easily fix TV glitches. You may need to attempt several fixes before you get to the real reason why Hulu isn’t working.
