Hisense TV Turns Itself On

This fact will probably shock you, but a smart TV can turn on by itself. So, don’t worry–your Hisense TV isn’t haunted! While it seems strange for a TV to turn on automatically, there are several reasons for this.

Hisense TV Turns Itself On

When a Hisense TV turns on randomly, there are logical reasons for this phenomenon. The problem could be in the HDMI cable, another digital device like a gaming system is turning on the TV, or your smartphone is activating the TV. This is often an easy fix.

It is undoubtedly distressing when the Hisense TV turns on at any time of day, although you are nowhere near the remote. The reason for this can be the power cord or Alexa, but the solution is narrowing down the origin. Try these easy fixes to stop your TV’s mysterious automatic on/off actions.

Reasons a Hisense TV Turns on By Itself

Hisense TV Turn On Reasons

While it seems spooky for your Hisense TV to turn on and off by itself, this can happen with any smart TV. Hearing the TV suddenly turn on in the middle of the night is unnerving, but there are logical reasons this could be happening to your Hisense TV. See if one of these issues is the culprit.

A Button on the Remote Is Stuck

Look at the TV remote to see if a button is stuck. You might not have noticed a faulty button before, but when a TV remote button becomes stuck, this can cause the TV to turn on without intervention. This is quite common and can be the reason your TV keeps turning on randomly.

A Device Connected to the TV Has an Issue

There are times when the TV power cord allows the unit to turn on by itself. If you have plugged the TV cord into a surge protector, this can cause the issue.

Using an HDMI cord is also a possible culprit, especially when the cable has consumer electronic control capabilities. This HDMI cable type can send signals to your TV that override the on/off power switch, allowing the Hisense TV to turn on.

The HDMI Cable Turns on the Hisense TV

Any HDMI cable with consumer electronics controls can turn on the TV to install an update to one or more software applications. The consumer electronics controls in the cable allow you to control multiple devices with one remote. This eliminates the need for multiple remote controls, so using your TV and the connected devices is more convenient.

Fixes for a Hisense TV That Turns Itself On

Hisense TV Fixes for Turning On

When you are ready to stop the unexpected turning on or off of your Hisense TV, some simple fixes can remedy this problem. Whether the cause is a TV setting or a faulty power cord, troubleshoot the issue with these fixes, and your TV should stay off when you turn it off.

Plug the Hisense TV Directly Into the Power Outlet

If you have plugged the Hisense TV into a surge protector or power strip, unplug the TV and plug it directly into the electrical outlet. Then, follow these steps to determine if the problem is in the power cord or the outlet you have used for power.

  1. Unplug the Hisense power cord from the power outlet.
  2. Press and hold the remote power button for fifteen seconds.
  3. Plug the Hisense TV power cord directly into the electrical wall outlet.

Disable the Consumer Electronics Control

The HDMI cable can contain the consumer electronics control (CEC) that lets a device like a gaming station turn on the Hisense TV, switch the input to the gaming device, and operate the TV from the gaming remote. When you disable the CEC, the gaming station can no longer automatically turn on the TV.

  1. Locate the TV settings using the TV remote.
  2. Select Inputs.
  3. Locate HDMI controls.
  4. Choose Device Auto Power Off.
  5. Change the option to ON.

This should tell the Hisense TV to turn off the CEC-compatible devices to remain off when the TV is off.

Turn Off Wi-Fi to the Hisense TV

When your TV has connections to your smartphone, Alexa, and other smart devices, they can unintentionally turn on the TV. This can be the problem causing your TV to turn on by itself. Follow these steps to narrow down which device is turning on the TV.

  1. Locate the Hisense TV settings.
  2. Find the Wi-Fi.
  3. Turn off the Wi-Fi when you finish watching TV.
  4. Leave the Wi-Fi off for one or two days.
  5. Wait to see if the TV turns on by itself.
  6. Check the settings of any digital devices connected to the Hisense TV and disable them.

The Hisense TV Power Timer Is Active

Most smart TVs have a power timer that can turn the TV on and off at specific, programmed times of the day. This can happen accidentally through the remote. Check to see if your Hisense TV has this setting, and follow the steps to disable it.

  1. Access the Hisense TV settings.
  2. Look for the Power Timer setting.
  3. Disable the Power Timer setting, and this should resolve the issue.

The Hisense Remote Batteries Are Low

Low batteries in a Hisense remote can send signals as the power fluctuates. There are several ways to see if the dying batteries are at fault. Try these steps.

  1. Replace the batteries in the remote.
  2. Clean the remote well inside and outside with rubbing alcohol and water.

Final Thoughts

No one wants to jolt awake in the middle of the night to the blaring sounds of a TV that has turned on by itself. It could be the power timer is active, and you don’t realize it or the remote batteries are low.

While a smart TV turning itself on is not uncommon, figuring out how to stop it is a priority. One of these recommended fixes will likely resolve the problem, and you won’t have to worry about a Hisense ghost TV any longer.
